SketchBetter Teaches Positive Psychology at Turner Contemporary

On Tuesday 7th February, we travelled to the east coast to meet a wonderful group of parents from Margate. As part of a pioneering 16-week Creative Enablers course for parents, running alongside the Turner Contemporary’s Art Inspiring Change programme for children, we delivered a hands-on day of Mindful Creativity, exploring Positive Psychology, Mindfulness and Creativity.

This workshop marked a year to the day since our drop-in drawing day at the Turner in 2016. It was wonderful to be back.

“Fantastic workshop” – Tamara Rattigan‏ (Children’s Illustrator and parent)

To begin the day, the twenty parents were introduced to the science of Positive Psychology and took part in two morning mindfulness meditations, led by Kate Andrews. They used their innate creativity to draw out their emotions in Story Spheres and then learnt about their Character Strengths.

“Enlightened by a new experience today. Using psychology and art to learn about my character strengths. Coached by SketchBetter.” – Tracey Rozier

The afternoon was led by artist and illustrator Pauline Callais, who guided the group through a drawing and watercolour exercise, to visualise their character strengths and to create an art piece to take home.

Thank you to all the parents who joined us and for trusting us to guide you through the day, especially for those of you who found it was emotional or out of your comfort zone. The results and learnings were incredible and we hope you enjoyed it as much as we did.

“Thank you SketchBetter for today’s workshop with @creative_enablers. I am not an artist and found this a difficult exercise emotionally as those who know me and my walks, I’m much more relaxed outdoors! But, I met the challenge head on and here is the result. Sketchbetter have an important message about the way the national curriculum is delivered in schools, check them out and spread the word if you agree.” – Carol Saunt
